May Day Word Search
This May Day word search has forty words for the first of May: the maypole and its ribbon, the May Queen in a flower crown, Beltane fires, Morris dancers with bells, hawthorn blossom, and the Haymarket strike that made it a workers' holiday.
The day is older than any of its customs. The Romans honored Flora, goddess of flowers, at the Floralia in late April and early May, and the Gaels lit Beltane bonfires on May 1 to mark the start of summer. In English villages people went out before dawn to gather hawthorn and greenery, crowned a May Queen and danced around a maypole on the village green. At Oxford the Magdalen College choir still sings from the top of the college tower at six in the morning.
In May 1886 workers across the United States struck for an eight-hour day, and in Chicago a rally at Haymarket Square ended in a bomb blast and deadly gunfire. In 1889 an international meeting of socialist parties chose May 1 as a day for workers, and much of the world now keeps it as International Workers' Day. The distress call mayday has nothing to do with spring: a radio officer at Croydon Airport chose it in 1923 because it sounds like the French m'aidez, help me.
