Labor Day Word Search
This Labor Day word search honors American workers and the long fight for fair hours and pay: the labor union and the strike, the picket line, Gompers, Debs and Mother Jones, the call for eight hours a day, the weekend and the end of summer picnic.
The first Labor Day parade marched in New York City on September 5, 1882, organized by the Central Labor Union, and about 10,000 workers gave up a day's pay to take part. Oregon made it a state holiday in 1887. Who first proposed the day is still argued over: Peter McGuire, a carpenter, gets the credit in most accounts, but some historians name Matthew Maguire, a machinist.
Congress made it a national holiday in June 1894, while the Pullman strike was spreading across the railroads. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill within days, and a week later he sent federal troops to Chicago to break the strike. The eight hour day took decades longer: the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 set a federal minimum wage and, by 1940, a 40 hour week with overtime pay.
