4th of July Word Search
This 4th of July word search celebrates Independence Day: the Declaration adopted in 1776, red, white and blue bunting, the hometown parade, Uncle Sam, the barbecue and the apple pie, the Liberty Bell and the fireworks after dark.
Philadelphia held the first anniversary celebration on July 4, 1777, with ringing bells, a salute of thirteen cannon shots, one for each state, and fireworks over the city that night. Congress made the Fourth a federal holiday in 1870. The date has a strange pull on American history: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826, fifty years to the day after the Declaration was adopted.
Uncle Sam is said to come from Samuel Wilson, a meat packer in Troy, New York, whose barrels of beef for the Army in the War of 1812 were stamped with the letters US, which soldiers joked stood for Uncle Sam. The marches of John Philip Sousa, the March King, still lead many parades, and in 1987 Congress made his The Stars and Stripes Forever the national march.
