The holiday began in Spokane, Washington, where Sonora Smart Dodd organized the first celebration on June 19, 1910. Her mother had died in childbirth, and her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran, raised six children on his own. She heard a Mother's Day sermon in 1909 and asked the local churches to set aside a day for fathers too, in June, the month of his birthday.
It took decades to become official. Calvin Coolidge backed the idea in 1924, and Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father's Day in 1966, but it did not become a permanent national holiday until Richard Nixon signed the law in 1972. Dodd suggested wearing a rose for the day: red for a living father, white for one who had died.
