Juneteenth Word Search
This Juneteenth word search has forty words for June 19: Galveston, Major General Granger and his General Order, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Thirteenth Amendment, Opal Lee, and the red velvet cake and strawberry soda of a family cookout.
On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and read General Order No. 3, which told the people of Texas that all enslaved people were free. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect two and a half years earlier, on January 1, 1863, but Texas was the far edge of the Confederacy and few Union troops had reached it. Slavery ended in law nationwide with the Thirteenth Amendment that December.
Freed people in Texas celebrated the date the next year and kept on doing so. In 1872 a group of them in Houston raised money to buy ten acres for their gatherings, now called Emancipation Park. Texas made Juneteenth a state holiday in 1980, and after years of campaigning by Opal Lee of Fort Worth, who at 89 set out to walk to Washington to ask for it, it became a federal holiday in June 2021.
