This Hispanic Heritage Month word search has forty words for September 15 to October 15: Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico, Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, Sotomayor, Clemente and Celia Cruz, plus papel picado and tamales.
The observance began as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson in 1968 and grew to a month in 1988, in a law signed by Ronald Reagan. It starts in the middle of September for a reason: September 15 is independence day for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, which declared it together in 1821. Mexico follows on September 16, the anniversary of Father Miguel Hidalgo's Grito de Dolores in 1810, Chile on the 18th and Belize on the 21st.
Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta founded the union that became the United Farm Workers in 1962, and Huerta gave it the motto Si se puede, yes, we can. Roberto Clemente of Puerto Rico reached 3,000 hits in 1972 and died that December in a plane crash while flying relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. In 2009 Sonia Sotomayor became the first Hispanic justice of the Supreme Court.
