Grammar Word Search
This grammar word search holds forty terms from the sentence lessons of upper elementary and middle school: subject and predicate, clause and phrase, the comma, the semicolon and the apostrophe, plus tense, plural and the dreaded run on sentence.
Every complete sentence needs two parts: a subject, which names who or what the sentence is about, and a predicate, which says something about it. A clause is a group of words with both parts; a phrase lacks one of them. Join two independent clauses with only a comma and you get a comma splice. Join them with nothing at all and you get a run-on.
Sentence diagrams, the branching lines that turn a sentence into a picture, were published by Alonzo Reed and Brainerd Kellogg in 1877 in their textbook Higher Lessons in English. The semicolon is much older. It dates from the 1490s, when the Venetian printer Aldus Manutius used it in Pietro Bembo's De Aetna to mark a pause longer than a comma and shorter than a colon.
