Gold Rush Word Search
This Gold Rush word search follows the rush to California that began in 1848: the find at Sutter's mill on the American River, the Forty Niners, the prospector and his pan, the nugget, the sluice and the rocker, the boomtown of San Francisco, and the later rush to the Klondike.
James Marshall found flakes of gold in the channel below John Sutter's sawmill at Coloma on January 24, 1848, nine days before the treaty that ended the war with Mexico made California American territory. Sutter tried to keep the find quiet and failed. By 1849 tens of thousands of fortune seekers were on their way, by wagon across the plains, by ship around Cape Horn, or by a shortcut across the Isthmus of Panama.
California filled so fast that it became a state in 1850 without ever being an organized territory. Most miners found little, and the steadier money was in selling to them: Levi Strauss, a dry goods merchant in San Francisco, later patented riveted denim work pants with the tailor Jacob Davis in 1873. The Klondike rush in Canada's Yukon followed a strike in 1896.
