Genetics Word Search

This genetics puzzle holds the words of a heredity unit: gene and allele, dominant and recessive, genotype and phenotype, the Punnett square, and Mendel and his pea plant experiments.

Gregor Mendel, a monk in Brno, grew thousands of pea plants between 1856 and 1863 and tracked seven traits, such as seed shape and flower color. He found that a recessive trait can vanish in one generation and come back in the next, in a ratio near three to one. He published in 1866 and almost no one noticed; three botanists found his work again, each on his own, in 1900.

Thomas Hunt Morgan bred fruit flies at Columbia University and in 1910 found a white-eyed male whose trait followed the X chromosome, the first proof that genes sit on chromosomes. In 1953 James Watson and Francis Crick described DNA as a double helix, building on X-ray images made by Rosalind Franklin. The Human Genome Project finished reading the human sequence in 2003.
