Cells Word Search
This cells puzzle holds forty words from a cell biology unit: the nucleus and nucleolus, the cytoplasm, the mitochondria and ribosome, the plant cell wall and chloroplast, and the scientists behind cell theory.
Robert Hooke named the cell in 1665, but the rest took almost two hundred years. Matthias Schleiden said in 1838 that all plants are made of cells, Theodor Schwann said the same of animals a year later, and in 1855 Rudolf Virchow added the third rule: every cell comes from another cell.
Cells come in two basic plans. A prokaryote, such as a bacterium, has no nucleus, and its DNA floats in the cytoplasm. A eukaryote keeps its DNA inside a nucleus and fills the rest of the cell with organelles. The mitochondria are the odd ones: they carry a small loop of their own DNA, left over from the free-living bacteria they descended from more than a billion years ago.
