Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, in physics in 1903, and she is still the only person to win in two different sciences, adding chemistry in 1911. Her notebooks are so radioactive that they are kept in lead-lined boxes. Lise Meitner helped explain nuclear fission in 1939 and never shared the Nobel Prize for it, though element 109, meitnerium, is named after her. Rosalind Franklin's X-ray image of DNA, known as Photo 51, was a key clue for Watson and Crick's model of the double helix in 1953.
Some famous names won for less famous work. Albert Einstein's Nobel Prize in 1921 was for explaining the photoelectric effect, not for relativity. Katherine Johnson checked the orbit calculations for John Glenn's flight in 1962, because Glenn asked for her to confirm the numbers from the new electronic computers before he would fly. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch cloth merchant, ground his own lenses and was the first to see bacteria.
