STEM Word Search
This STEM word search mixes the four subjects in the name, science, technology, engineering and math, with the things students do in them: coding, robotics, building a prototype, testing a hypothesis and wiring a circuit.
The four letters were first put together at the National Science Foundation in the 1990s, in a different order, as SMET. Around 2001 Judith Ramaley, then an NSF director, rearranged them into STEM, partly because it sounded better and partly because a stem is what a plant grows from. Some schools now add an A for the arts and write STEAM.
American schools had pushed the same subjects once before. When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in October 1957, the United States feared it was falling behind, and in 1958 Congress passed the National Defense Education Act, which paid for science labs, math classes and college loans. The same year it set up NASA. Much of the space program of the 1960s was built by engineers who had gone to college on that money.
