Hero of Alexandria, a Greek engineer of the first century, listed five machines for moving heavy loads: the lever, the wheel and axle, the pulley, the wedge and the screw. Scientists of the Renaissance added the inclined plane to make six. Archimedes, nearly three centuries before Hero, worked out the law of the lever and is said to have boasted that with a place to stand, he could move the Earth.
Levers come in three classes, sorted by what sits in the middle. A seesaw or crowbar has the fulcrum in the middle; a nutcracker or wheelbarrow has the load in the middle; tweezers have the effort in the middle. None of these machines saves work. They trade force for distance, so a ramp twice as long as it is high halves the push you need, but you push it twice as far.
