Flag Day Word Search

This Flag Day word search has forty words for June 14: Old Glory with its stars and stripes, the blue canton, the halyard that raises it, the pledge, Betsy Ross, Fort McHenry and Cigrand, the teacher who started the day.

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress resolved that the flag of the United States would have thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, and thirteen white stars in a blue field. In 1885 Bernard Cigrand, a young schoolteacher in Waubeka, Wisconsin, had his pupils mark the date as the flag's birthday, and he spent decades writing and speaking for a national observance. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Flag Day in 1916, and Congress made it official in 1949 under Harry Truman.

The 50-star design has flown since July 4, 1960, the first Fourth of July after Hawaii became a state. The story that Betsy Ross sewed the first flag was made public by her grandson in 1870, almost a century later, and no record from 1777 confirms it. The study of flags has its own name, vexillology, from vexillum, the Latin word for a banner.
