First Communion Word Search
This First Communion word search gathers the words of a Catholic child's big day: the Eucharist, the host and the chalice, the altar and the priest, the white dress and veil, the rosary and missal, and the family celebration afterward.
Eucharist comes from the Greek for thanksgiving. The priest consecrates bread and wine at Mass; the hosts rest on a small plate called the paten or in a covered cup called a ciborium, and the wine is held in the chalice. Most children first study the catechism and make their first confession, the sacrament of reconciliation, and they fast for an hour before receiving.
Children have received First Communion at around age seven only since 1910, when Pope Pius X issued the decree Quam Singulari. Before then many waited until they were twelve or fourteen. In the United States the day usually falls in the spring of second grade. Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches give communion to infants right after baptism, so their children never have a separate first communion day.
