This Beatitudes word search takes its words from the blessings that open the Sermon on the Mount: blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, the merciful, the pure in heart and the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.
Matthew 5 lists eight beatitudes, with a ninth for those insulted and persecuted for Jesus' sake, then moves straight to the sayings about the salt of the earth and the light of the world, a lamp that no one hides under a bushel. Luke 6 has a shorter version, the Sermon on the Plain, with four blessings balanced by four woes, and it says simply, "Blessed be ye poor."
Beatitude comes from the Latin beatus, meaning blessed or happy, the word the Latin Bible uses to open each line. The meek, Jesus says, shall inherit the earth, a promise taken from Psalm 37. On a hill above the Sea of Galilee near Capernaum, the Church of the Beatitudes, finished in 1938, has eight sides, one for each blessing.
