Constitution Day Word Search
This Constitution Day word search has forty words for September 17: the Preamble, the signers in Philadelphia, Madison and Franklin, the three branches with their checks and balances, the parchment in the Rotunda, and the naturalization of new citizens.
The text the delegates signed on September 17, 1787, was written out by hand by Jacob Shallus, a clerk of the Pennsylvania legislature, who was paid 30 dollars for the four pages of parchment. As the last delegates signed, Benjamin Franklin pointed to the sun carved on the back of George Washington's chair and said he now knew it was a rising sun and not a setting one; James Madison wrote the remark down in his notes. The plan took effect when New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify, on June 21, 1788.
The day itself began as I Am an American Day in 1940 and was renamed Citizenship Day in 1952, and many immigrants still take the oath of citizenship at naturalization ceremonies on September 17. Senator Robert Byrd wrote the 2004 law that added Constitution Day to the name and requires schools that receive federal money to teach about the Constitution that day. The four pages are on display in the Rotunda of the National Archives in Washington.
