Astronomy Word Search

This astronomy word search holds forty words from the science of the sky: the telescope and the observatory, the galaxy, nebula and quasar, the black hole and the light year, and the astronomers Galileo, Kepler and Copernicus.

Copernicus put the Sun at the center of the planets in a book printed in 1543, the year he died. Galileo turned a homemade telescope on the sky in 1609 and 1610 and saw four moons circling Jupiter, which proved that not everything went around the Earth. Kepler worked out that planets travel in ellipses rather than perfect circles, and Newton's law of gravity, published in 1687, explained why.

A light year measures distance, not time: it is how far light travels in a year, nearly six trillion miles. In the 1920s Edwin Hubble showed that the fuzzy spiral nebulae were whole galaxies far outside the Milky Way, and that their light is stretched toward red, a redshift that means they are moving away from us. The space telescope launched in 1990 carries his name.
