Moon Word Search
This moon word search has forty words about Earth's only natural satellite: each phase from crescent to gibbous, the crater and the dark mare, the tide it pulls, and the Apollo crew of Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins.
Apollo 11 touched down on July 20, 1969, in the Sea of Tranquility. Armstrong and Aldrin flew the lander, named Eagle, to the surface while Collins circled overhead in the command module Columbia. The dark seas they landed on are not water at all. Early astronomers named them maria, Latin for seas, but they are wide plains of basalt left by ancient lava. Twelve astronauts walked on the Moon between 1969 and 1972.
The Moon spins once for every trip around the Earth, so the same face always points at us. The far side is not dark; it gets as much sunlight as the near side, we just never see it from home. The Moon is also slowly drifting away, about an inch and a half a year, a figure measured by bouncing lasers off mirrors the Apollo crews left behind. The harvest moon is the full moon nearest the autumn equinox.
