Columbus Day Word Search
This Columbus Day word search has forty words for the second Monday in October: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria, the caravel and the astrolabe, Genoa, Isabella and Ferdinand, San Salvador, and the Taino people who met the ships.
Christopher Columbus, a sailor from Genoa, spent years asking European courts to pay for a voyage west to Asia before Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain agreed. He left the port of Palos on August 3, 1492, and on October 12 a lookout sighted land in the Bahamas. The Taino called the island Guanahani; Columbus named it San Salvador. Believing he had reached the Indies, he called the people he met Indians.
The 400th anniversary in 1892 brought the first national celebration, and Italian American groups and the Knights of Columbus pushed for a holiday, which became federal in 1937. Since 1971 it has fallen on the second Monday of October. Berkeley, California, replaced it with Indigenous Peoples Day in 1992, and many states and cities now mark that day instead of Columbus Day or beside it.
