Civil War Word Search

This Civil War word search covers the war between the Union and the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865: the first shots at Fort Sumter, the battles of Antietam, Vicksburg and Gettysburg, generals Grant, Lee and Sherman, and the surrender at Appomattox.

The war began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate guns fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Eleven Southern states had seceded or soon would. Antietam, fought in Maryland in September 1862, is still the bloodiest single day in American history, with about 23,000 men killed, wounded or missing. The Union held the field, and five days later Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

In July 1863 the Union won at Gettysburg and, a day later, took Vicksburg, which gave it control of the Mississippi River. The first battle between ironclads, the Monitor against the CSS Virginia, built on the hull of the old Merrimack, ended in a draw in March 1862. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865.
