This church word search covers the building and the Sunday service: the steeple, bell and stained glass outside, the narthex, nave, pew, pulpit and altar inside, and the choir and sermon that fill it.
Many older churches are built in the shape of a cross. The nave, from the Latin navis for ship, is the long main hall where the congregation sits; the transept crosses it near the front, and the narthex is the entrance hall at the back. The pulpit is raised for the sermon, while the lectern holds the Bible for the readings, and in many Anglican churches it is carved as an eagle with spread wings.
Pews are newer than most of the buildings. Medieval congregations mostly stood or brought their own stools, and fixed benches spread after the Reformation, when sermons grew longer. Families once rented their pews by the year, and the money helped pay the minister. The English word church comes through Old English cirice from the Greek kyriakon, meaning the Lord's house.
