Arbor Day was the idea of J. Sterling Morton, a newspaper editor who moved to the treeless prairie of Nebraska in 1854 and wanted it planted for shade, fuel, windbreaks and fruit. At his urging the state held the first Arbor Day on April 10, 1872, and people planted an estimated one million trees that day. Morton later served as Secretary of Agriculture under Grover Cleveland.
Nebraska made the day a legal holiday in 1885 and set it on Morton's birthday, April 22. National Arbor Day now falls on the last Friday in April, although some states pick a date that fits their own planting season. A tree adds one ring of new wood each year just under the bark, a pale band of fast spring growth beside a darker band from late summer, so counting the rings on a stump gives its age.
