Ancient Rome Word Search
This ancient Rome word search holds forty words from the city on the Tiber: Romulus and Remus, the Senate and the consul, Caesar and Augustus, the gladiator in the Colosseum, and the aqueduct that brought in fresh water.
Romans dated their city from 753 BC, when legend says Romulus founded it. They threw out their last king in 509 BC and set up a republic run by two consuls, each elected for one year so that no one man could become a king again. In 49 BC Julius Caesar led his army across the Rubicon, a small river the law forbade him to cross with troops, and made himself dictator. Senators stabbed him to death on the Ides of March, 44 BC, and his adopted heir Octavian became Augustus, the first emperor, in 27 BC.
Roman concrete, made with volcanic ash, has lasted two thousand years; the dome of the Pantheon in Rome is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. When Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, ash buried Pompeii so fast that it kept loaves of bread in the ovens and graffiti on the walls.
