All Saints Day Word Search
This All Saints Day word search marks November 1, the feast for every saint, known or unknown: the martyrs of the early church, Hallowmas and the Halloween before it, All Souls the day after, soul cakes, candles and chrysanthemum flowers on family graves.
The feast grew out of the honor paid to martyrs. In about 609, Pope Boniface IV consecrated the Pantheon in Rome, built as a temple to all the Roman gods, as a church of Mary and all the martyrs. In the 730s Pope Gregory III dedicated a chapel in St Peter's to all the saints on November 1, and in 835 Gregory IV extended the feast to the whole Western church.
Hallow is an old English word for saint, so Halloween is the eve of All Hallows, and Hallowmas is the feast itself. All Souls Day on November 2, for all the faithful dead, was set by Abbot Odilo of Cluny around 998. In England children went souling, singing door to door for soul cakes, and in France, where the day is called Toussaint, families still lay pots of chrysanthemums on graves.
