Countries Word Search
This countries word search holds forty nations from every inhabited continent: Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Chile in the Americas, New Zealand and the island states of Fiji and Samoa, and Kenya and Japan across the oceans.
Most lists count 195 countries today: the 193 members of the United Nations plus two observer states, Vatican City and Palestine. The newest is South Sudan, which became independent in 2011. Russia is the largest by area and Canada the second, and Canada also has the longest coastline of any country, more than 200,000 kilometers once its thousands of Arctic islands are counted.
Many of the names carry a story. Ecuador is Spanish for equator, which crosses the country just north of the capital, Quito. Bolivia is named after Simon Bolivar, who led much of South America to independence from Spain, and Argentina takes its name from argentum, the Latin word for silver, which the Spanish hoped to find there. Chile is about 4,300 kilometers long but nowhere more than about 350 kilometers wide, squeezed between the Andes and the Pacific.
