Mexico Word Search
This Mexico word search holds forty words from the country: Mexico City, Oaxaca and the Yucatan, the Aztec and Maya cities of Tenochtitlan and Chichen Itza, the mariachi band, and the axolotl of the old lake canals.
Mexico City stands on the site of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital founded on an island in Lake Texcoco around 1325. Legend says the Aztecs were told to build where they saw an eagle on a cactus eating a snake, and that scene sits in the center of the Mexican flag. The lake was drained over the centuries, and the axolotl, a salamander that keeps its frilly gills all its life, now survives in the wild only in the canals of Xochimilco.
Teotihuacan, north of the capital, was already in ruins when the Aztecs found it, and its name, often translated as the place where the gods were born, is the one they gave it. The volcano Popocatepetl, at about 5,400 meters, still smokes on the skyline. Each fall monarch butterflies fly as far as 3,000 miles to winter in the fir forests of Michoacan, and every September 16 Mexico marks the day in 1810 when Miguel Hidalgo called for independence from Spain.
