Four inventions are taught in China as the great gifts of its past: paper, the compass, gunpowder and printing. Paper is credited to Cai Lun, a court official who presented it to the emperor in AD 105. The Great Wall is not one wall but many, built and rebuilt over two thousand years, and a national survey in 2012 measured all its branches at more than 21,000 kilometers. Most of the brick sections visitors walk today date from the Ming dynasty.
The Forbidden City in Beijing was home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and ordinary people could not enter it for about five hundred years. The Yangtze is the longest river in Asia, and the Three Gorges Dam across it is the largest power station in the world. Wild giant pandas live only in the mountain bamboo forests of central China, and the whole country, wide as it is, runs on a single time zone.
