Wrestling is one of the oldest sports there is. Tomb paintings at Beni Hasan in Egypt, about four thousand years old, show hundreds of pairs of wrestlers in different holds, and wrestling joined the ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC. Today the Olympics hold two styles: Greco-Roman, where no holds below the waist are allowed, and freestyle, where a wrestler can attack the legs.
American high schools and colleges use a third style, folkstyle, which rewards control on the mat as much as throws. A wrestler earns points for a takedown, an escape or a reversal, and wins at once with a fall, by holding both of the opponent's shoulder blades to the mat. Every wrestler steps on a scale at the weigh-in before competing, so that each bout is fought within a weight class.
