The first organized indoor game was played in Montreal in 1875, at the Victoria Skating Rink, with a flat piece of wood instead of a ball so it would not fly into the crowd. The Stanley Cup came in 1892, donated by Lord Stanley of Preston, then Governor General of Canada; it is the oldest trophy in North American professional sports, and every winning player's name is engraved on it.
The machine that cleans the ice between periods is named after its inventor. Frank Zamboni, who ran an ice rink in Paramount, California, built the first Zamboni in 1949 so that a sheet of ice could be resurfaced in minutes instead of more than an hour.
