Soccer Word Search

The name was British before it was American. After the Football Association was founded in 1863 the game was called association football, to tell it apart from rugby football, and Oxford students of the 1880s, who liked to shorten words with an -er ending, turned assoc into soccer. Britain later dropped the word; the United States, where football meant another game, kept it.
The first World Cup was played in Uruguay in 1930, with thirteen teams, and Uruguay won it. The 2026 tournament, held across the United States, Canada and Mexico, was the first with 48 teams.
