Golf Word Search
Forty golf words, from the first tee to the last green: the fairway, the rough and the bunker, the driver, the wedge and the putter, and the scores from bogey and par to the birdie, the eagle and the rare albatross.
Golf as it is played today comes from Scotland. In 1457 King James II of Scotland banned it, along with football, because it kept men away from their archery practice. The Old Course at St Andrews set the length of a round almost by accident in 1764, when the club joined several short holes together and cut its course from 22 holes to 18. The other courses followed.
The word birdie came from American slang of around 1900, when anything excellent was a bird, and the eagle and the albatross followed as bigger and rarer birds for even better scores. The Masters, played each April at Augusta National in Georgia, has given its winner a green jacket since 1949. In 1971 the astronaut Alan Shepard hit two golf balls on the Moon during Apollo 14.
