This Wonder puzzle holds forty words from R. J. Palacio's novel: Auggie Pullman, his sister Via, his friends Jack Will and Summer, Julian, Mr Tushman, Mr Browne and his precepts, Beecher Prep, and the rule the book is known for, choose kind.
Palacio got the idea outside an ice cream shop, when her young son saw a girl with a severe facial difference and started to cry. Palacio hurried him away to spare the girl's feelings, then felt she had handled it badly, and that night she began writing. Wonder came out in 2012, her first novel. Auggie was born with a rare condition that shaped the bones of his face, and after years of homeschooling he starts fifth grade at Beecher Prep.
The book is told in parts by different narrators, so the reader hears from Via, Summer, Jack, Justin and Miranda as well as Auggie. Mr Browne writes a new precept on the board each month, and his first is the line the book is known for: when given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind. A 2017 film starred Jacob Tremblay as Auggie, with Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson as his parents.
