The Brothers Grimm were not children's writers. Jacob and Wilhelm were philologists collecting oral stories as evidence for how German had changed, and their first edition in 1812 carried scholarly footnotes and a good deal of violence. It sold poorly. They spent the next forty years rewriting the tales to be gentler and more pious, and it is the seventh edition that the world knows.

The stories themselves travel further than any one collection. Folklorists index tale types rather than titles, and the Cinderella type has hundreds of versions across Europe, Africa and Asia; the oldest written one comes from ninth-century China, where the shoe is made of gold and the girl is helped by a fish. The glass slipper is a late French detail.
