Alice in Wonderland Word Search
This Alice in Wonderland puzzle holds forty words from Lewis Carroll's two books: Alice, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Hatter, the March Hare, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle and Tweedledum.
The story was first told out loud. On July 4, 1862, Charles Dodgson, a mathematics lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford, rowed up the Thames with the three Liddell sisters, and ten-year-old Alice asked him for a story. He wrote it down for her, and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was published in 1865 under the name Lewis Carroll, with drawings by John Tenniel. The Dodo is usually read as Dodgson himself, who had a stammer.
Carroll never calls him the Mad Hatter. The phrase mad as a hatter was already in use, and hat makers of the time worked with mercury, which damaged their nerves. The sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, came out in 1871 and is built as a game of chess: Alice starts as a white pawn and becomes a queen when she reaches the eighth square, meeting Humpty Dumpty and hearing the poem Jabberwocky along the way.
