Women compete on four apparatus in artistic gymnastics and men on six: floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and the high bar. The German teacher Friedrich Ludwig Jahn put parallel bars and a horizontal bar in his outdoor gym in Berlin in 1811. Rhythmic gymnastics, done to music with a ribbon, hoop, ball or clubs, joined the Olympics in 1984.
At the 1976 Montreal Games, Nadia Comaneci of Romania, age 14, scored the first perfect ten in Olympic gymnastics; the scoreboard could only show 1.00 because no one expected a ten. Since 2006 scores have no top limit: judges add a difficulty value to an execution mark out of ten. Simone Biles has several skills named after her in the rules.
