Yoga began in ancient India, and its terms are Sanskrit. The Yoga Sutras, short teachings credited to the sage Patanjali and written down well over 1,500 years ago, barely mention poses at all; there asana means a steady, comfortable seat for meditation. Most of the standing poses taught in classes today took their present shape in the 1900s.
The Hindu monk Swami Vivekananda introduced yoga philosophy to many Americans at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. In 2014 the United Nations declared June 21 the International Day of Yoga, a date chosen because it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. A sun salutation links each of its poses to an inhale or an exhale.
