Telling Time Word Search
This telling time puzzle holds 40 words for reading a clock: the hour hand and the minute hand, half past, quarter past and quarter to, analog and digital, noon and midnight, and the sixty minutes in every hour.
The numbers on a clock are older than clocks. The Egyptians split daylight into 12 hours, and the Babylonians, who counted in sixties, are the reason an hour has 60 minutes and a minute 60 seconds. Clock hands turn clockwise because the shadow on a sundial in the northern half of the world moves the same way, from left to right across the dial, and the first mechanical clocks copied it.
Early tower clocks had only an hour hand, because they could drift by many minutes a day. In 1656 the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens built the first pendulum clock, accurate to about a minute a day, and after that a minute hand was worth adding. The letters a.m. and p.m. come from the Latin for before midday and after midday.
