Multiplication Word Search
This multiplication puzzle holds 40 words from the times tables unit: the factor and the product, the array, equal groups, skip counting, the times table, the commutative and distributive properties, the lattice method and Napier and his bones.
An array shows why order does not matter. Three rows of four dots, turned on its side, is four rows of three, so 3 x 4 and 4 x 3 give the same product; that is the commutative property. The distributive property breaks a hard fact into easy ones: 7 x 8 is 7 x 5 plus 7 x 3, or 35 plus 21, which makes 56.
The times sign itself was introduced by the English mathematician William Oughtred in 1631. Gottfried Leibniz disliked it because it looked too much like the letter x and used a raised dot instead. In 1617 John Napier of Scotland published his bones, numbered rods that turned long multiplication into adding, and lattice multiplication, which fills a grid of boxes split by diagonals, was used in India and the Arab world before Fibonacci brought it to Europe.
