Fractions Word Search
This fractions puzzle holds 40 words from the fractions unit: the numerator and denominator, half, third and quarter, equivalent fractions, the mixed number, the improper fraction, the reciprocal and lowest terms.
The two names explain the job of each number. Denominator comes from the Latin for naming: the bottom number names the size of the parts, so a 4 there means fourths. Numerator comes from the Latin for counting: the top number counts how many of those parts you have. Multiply both by the same number and you get an equivalent fraction, so 3/4 and 6/8 are the same amount.
Ancient Egyptian scribes wrote almost every fraction as a sum of unit fractions, ones with 1 on top, so two fifths became a third plus a fifteenth; the Rhind papyrus, copied around 1550 BC, has a whole table of them. The bar between the numbers came through Arab mathematicians and reached Europe in a book by Fibonacci in 1202. To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal, the same fraction turned upside down.
