This algebra puzzle holds 40 terms from Algebra 1: the variable and the coefficient, the equation and the inequality, the polynomial and the quadratic, slope and intercept, the parabola and the ordered pair.
Writing x for the unknown is younger than algebra itself. For centuries problems were written out in words. Rene Descartes, in a book of 1637, used the last letters of the alphabet, x, y and z, for unknowns and the first letters, a, b and c, for known amounts, and he joined algebra to geometry by drawing an equation as a line or curve on a grid of two axes.
The Babylonians solved problems we would now write as quadratic equations on clay tablets nearly 4,000 years ago. Today a quadratic graphs as a parabola, the same curve a thrown ball follows, and its vertex is the highest or lowest point. In the line y = mx + b, the coefficient m is the slope, how steeply the line climbs, and b is where it crosses the y axis.
