Geometry Word Search
This geometry puzzle holds 40 terms from the geometry unit: point, ray and segment, acute and obtuse angles, the rhombus and trapezoid, the radius, diameter and circumference, the hypotenuse and the protractor.
Geometry means earth measuring in Greek, and the Greek historian Herodotus said it began in Egypt, where surveyors had to redraw field boundaries after each flood of the Nile. Around 300 BC Euclid of Alexandria gathered what was known into the Elements, thirteen books that build every theorem from a handful of starting rules, and schools taught geometry from it for more than two thousand years.
Around 240 BC Eratosthenes measured the whole Earth with a shadow. At noon on the longest day the sun stood straight above Syene, while in Alexandria a stick cast a shadow at about 7 degrees, one fiftieth of a circle, so he reckoned the circumference was 50 times the distance between the two cities. The rule for the hypotenuse of a right triangle carries the name of Pythagoras, but a Babylonian tablet more than a thousand years older lists numbers that fit it.
