Summer Camp Word Search

This summer camp word search holds forty words from a week or a month away: the camper and the counselor, the bunk bed and the mess hall, archery, the lanyard, tie dye, the color war, the evening campfire and taps at lights out.

American summer camp is usually traced to 1861, when Frederick Gunn, who ran a boys' school in Connecticut, marched his students out for two weeks of camping, fishing and boating. Camp Dudley, a YMCA camp started in 1885 in New York, claims to be the oldest camp in the country still running. The braided plastic lanyard has camp roots too: a scout leader is said to have named his woven cord a boondoggle in the 1920s, and the word later came to mean work that gets nothing done.

Camp days often run on bugle calls borrowed from the army. Reveille wakes the cabins in the morning, and taps ends the day. Taps was written in 1862, during the Civil War, by the Union general Daniel Butterfield with his bugler, Oliver Norton, to replace the older call for lights out, and the same short tune is now played at military funerals.
