Luau Word Search
This luau word search holds forty words from a Hawaiian feast: the hula and the lei, the ukulele and the pahu drum, poi and kalua pig from the imu, haupia for dessert, and an aloha for every guest.
The word luau is the Hawaiian name for young taro leaves, which were cooked with coconut milk and chicken or squid and served at feasts, and the dish gave its name to the whole party. Before 1819, men and women ate apart under the old kapu rules. That year King Kamehameha II sat down to eat with women in public, ending the ban, and the shared feast followed.
The centerpiece is the kalua pig, cooked for hours in an imu, a pit oven lined with hot stones and covered with banana and ti leaves to hold in the steam. Poi is taro root pounded into a smooth paste. Hula once carried history and family lines in chant, and after missionaries discouraged it, King Kalakaua brought it back to his court in the 1880s. Hawaii has celebrated Lei Day every May 1 since 1928.
