Digestive System Word Search
This digestive system word search has forty words that follow a meal from start to finish: saliva and amylase, the esophagus, the stomach with its pepsin and chyme, the small intestine and its villi, bile from the liver, and the colon.
Digestion starts before you swallow. Teeth grind food, and the amylase in saliva begins turning starch into sugar. The esophagus moves each swallowed lump, called a bolus, by peristalsis, rings of muscle squeezing in a wave, which is why you can swallow even while upside down. In the stomach, hydrochloric acid and the enzyme pepsin break down protein and churn the meal into a thick liquid called chyme, let out a little at a time into the duodenum.
The small intestine, about 20 feet long in an adult, does most of the absorbing through millions of tiny fingerlike villi. The liver makes bile and the gallbladder stores it until a meal arrives; bile breaks fat into small droplets. Much of what is known about the stomach began with William Beaumont, an Army surgeon who from 1822 studied digestion through a gunshot wound that never closed in the stomach of a fur trader named Alexis St. Martin, lowering food into it on a silk string.
