Skeletal System Word Search
This skeletal system word search has forty bone words from a life science unit: the skull and mandible, clavicle and scapula, the vertebrae, the femur, patella and fibula, the marrow inside and the cartilage at the joints.
An adult skeleton has 206 bones in two groups. The axial skeleton, 80 bones, runs down the middle: the skull, the hyoid, the spine, the ribs and the sternum. The appendicular skeleton, 126 bones, holds the shoulders, arms, hips and legs. The femur is the longest and strongest bone, and the stapes, a stirrup-shaped bone in the middle ear, is the smallest. The hyoid in the throat is the only bone that does not form a joint with another bone.
Bone is living tissue. Cells called osteoblasts lay down new bone, which is how a fracture knits back together inside a cast, and the hard outer layer is wrapped in a thin skin called the periosteum. Red marrow in spongy bone makes red and white blood cells, and the skeleton stores about 99 percent of the body's calcium. A newborn's skull has soft spots called fontanels, which close by about age two.
