This circulatory system word search has forty words from the heart and blood unit: the atrium and ventricle, the aorta, artery, vein and capillary, plasma and platelets, hemoglobin, and the pulse you feel at the wrist.

The heart has four chambers. The two atria on top collect blood, and the two ventricles below pump it out. The right side sends blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs to pick up oxygen and drop off carbon dioxide; the left side, with its thicker wall, pushes it out through the aorta to the rest of the body. Arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins bring it back, and capillaries, with walls one cell thick, connect them. The lub dub in a stethoscope is the sound of the valves snapping shut.

For centuries doctors followed the Greek physician Galen, who taught that blood was made in the liver and used up by the body. In 1628 the English doctor William Harvey published his proof that the heart pumps the same blood around a closed loop. Red cells get their color from hemoglobin, an iron-carrying protein that picks up oxygen in the lungs, and platelets gather at a cut to start a clot.
