Poetry Word Search
This poetry word search holds the forms and tools of a poetry unit: the sonnet, haiku, limerick and villanelle, the parts of a poem like the stanza and the couplet, and the sounds of rhyme, meter and assonance.
Each form comes with a rule. A sonnet has fourteen lines, often an octave followed by a sestet, and Shakespeare wrote 154 of them. A haiku as taught in English runs five, seven and five syllables, a pattern borrowed from Japanese poets like Basho in the 1600s. The limerick took off with Edward Lear's A Book of Nonsense in 1846, and its five lines bounce along the same rhythm every time.
The villanelle is the strictest form on the list: nineteen lines, only two rhymes, and two lines that come back again and again as a refrain. Dylan Thomas used it for Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night in 1951. Even the word poem is about craft. It comes from the Greek poiein, to make, so a poet was first of all a maker.
