Reading Word Search

This reading word search covers both the book and the reader: the chapter, spine and index, kinds of book like mystery and biography, and the strategies a class practices, from predict and visualize to summarize and reread.

For most of history, reading meant reading out loud. In his Confessions, written around 400, Augustine of Hippo described with surprise how Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, read with his eyes moving over the page and his voice silent. A classroom read aloud keeps the older habit alive, and teachers use it to model fluency: the speed, accuracy and expression of a reader who no longer stops to decode.

The Library of Congress began in 1800 in the new Capitol building. British troops burned it in 1814, and the next year Congress bought Thomas Jefferson's personal library of 6,487 books to start again. A bookworm was first an insect, the larva of a beetle or moth that bores through bindings and pages, before it became the word for a person who reads all day.
