Vocabulary Word Search
This vocabulary word search holds forty words a middle grade reader meets in books and on tests: abundant, cautious, enormous, reluctant, scarce, vivid, peculiar and persuade. None are rare in print, and most are rare in everyday talk.
Teachers often sort words into three tiers, a scheme from Isabel Beck, Margaret McKeown and Linda Kucan's 2002 book Bringing Words to Life. Tier one is the talk of home, like dog and happy. Tier three belongs to one subject, like photosynthesis. Tier two sits between: words such as gradual, sincere and tedious that turn up in every subject's reading but seldom at the dinner table, and that is where this list comes from.
English has plenty of them. The second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary gives full entries to 171,476 words in current use. Many come in pairs that sharpen each other. Scarce and abundant are opposites, while timid and reluctant are near neighbors: a timid person holds back out of fear, a reluctant one out of not wanting to.
